The North Carolina Real Estate Exam Pass Fail Statistics for August 2018

The North Carolina Real Estate Commission just released last month's results for the North Carolina real estate exam.  Here is the news.  In August 2018, six hundred and fifty one real estate license applicants took the North Carolina real estate exam for the first time.  Three hundred and ninety two of those test takers passed.  Two hundred and fifty nine of these real estate license candidates will be paying $164 to try again.  It costs $164 every time a candidate takes the North Carolina real estate exam.  It is a good idea to pass it the first time.  As you can see, in August, only sixty per cent of the exam takers passed it the first time.  Do not underestimate the North Carolina real estate exam.  It is tough. 

     Also in August 2018, one hundred and sixty two repeat test takers took the North Carolina real estate exam for the second or third or fourth or fifth try.  Thirty one of these of these repeat exam takers passed.  That is 19% pass rate.

Pass the North Carolina real estate exam the first time.  

     If you mistakenly believe that the North Carolina real estate exam is easy, think again.  It is not easy.  It is not inexpensive.

     North Carolina probably has the lowest pass rate in America.  The North Carolina real estate exam is a two part exam.  One hundred questions are the "national" portion of the exam.  These are questions that would be answered the same in all fifty states.  This would be questions like. "What is the CFPB?".   The answer would be the same no matter what state you are in.  Forty questions on the North Carolina real estate exam are questions that are unique to North Carolina.  These are questions like,"What is the Machinery Act?".   The other forty nine  states probably do not have a Machinery Act.  A real estate license applicant needs to get 29 of these 40 questions correct to pass the North Carolina portion of the exam.  Of the thirty seven  real estate license applicants that took the exam last month as a repeat test taker at an expense of $164, twenty five of them passed.  That is 68%.

      If you are soon taking the North Carolina  real estate exam, please heed my advice .  OVERSTUDY!    I has been my observation from thirty years of teaching real estate classes that most students want to study just enough to baaaaaarely pass.  May I suggest that you study with an attitude that you want to make 100% on the North Carolina real estate  exam.  Study like you want to get an A plus on the North Carolina exam.  If you fall short of your goal, you will still pass and get a North Carolina real estate license.

Another Real Estate Instructor Career Killed in Infancy

     Mike McCallister, the current national president of the Real Estate Educator's Association talked to us at the North Carolina Real Estate Educator's spring conference in Cary, North Carolina yesterday.  He told us that we need to bring some young, energetic, new instructors into the industry.

     In North Carolina, when you apply for a real estate instructor license, an instructor license candidate is required by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission to submit a 50 minute digital video recording of his teaching style to be evaluated by the staff of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.  If the staff does not like your video, you don't get a instructor license.  Here is link to explain my own lengthy, arduous, expensive, frustrating process as an old, experienced, veteran instructor to get my first real estate instructor license in North Carolina.  http://rondclimer.blogspot.com/2016/09/my-process-to-get-my-north-carolina.html  WHAT AN ORDEAL!

     During lunch, just before Mike spoke, I ran into a school director that I had met last year at the NCREEA fall conference last October.  I asked her where was her young protege.  She told me that her young protege had turned in two videos to the staff of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission while she had her six month temporary license was in force.  Both videos were rejected by the staff of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.  She gave up.

We need young, new real estate instructors in our industry

     WHAT A SHAME!  What a shame that her ability to get a real estate instructor license, based on whether or not the staff of the N.C.R.E.C. likes her video, stopped a career.  If I had the experience in 1978 in Florida when I got my first real estate instructor permit that I had in 2016 in North Carolina, I would haven given up.  I would have had to give up because I didn't have another $150 to pay for another expert video technician to shoot another video.  I could not even have afforded another sim card in those days.  I certainly could not have afforded an expert trainer to teach me how to teach the way someone else thinks is a good way to teach.

     I am not certain but I think that North Carolina is the only state in America that requires a video evaluation by the regulators to get a real estate instructor's license.  I appeared in person in December of 2016 along with several other instructors to beseech the N.C.R.E.C. to eliminate this unnecessary video evaluation hazing process.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPB0ZIwKWk8

     My hope is that other instructors will let the N.C.R.E.C. know that we do not need the regulators to tell us if an instructor is good or no good.  A school director can do that.  It would make sense for a school director to watch a fifty minute video of a job applicant or better yet sit in a classroom with that job applicant.  If that applicant explains things wrongly or has unacceptable poor grammar or offends several students, that school director would probably not hire that  instructor even if they do have a license.  That makes sense.  It does not make sense for the regulators to tell that poor instructor that he is not worthy to hold a real estate instructor license.

     At the recent instructor conference in Cary, Chris Barnett asked us to post some things on Facebook that other instructors would be interested in.  Please get interested in this.  Send an email to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.  www.ncrec.gov   Let them know that you think the video evaluation process is unnecessary at least and a career killer at worst.

Pass Fail Statistics for The North Carolina Real Estate Exam for January 2018

In January 2018, Five hundred and eighteen real estate license applicants attempted the North Carolina real estate exam.  Two hundred and fifty of these real estate test takers passed.  Two hundred and sixty eight of them will be paying $164 to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission to try again.  This is no easy test.  Last month's pass ratio was 48%. 

All of these test applicants have graduated from an approved real estate school in North Carolina.  Why is the pass ratio so low? 

When an applicant takes the North Carolina real estate exam, it is really two exams.  One hundred questions are what the North Carolina Real Estate Commission calls the national portion of the test.  An applicant has to get 72 of the 100 questions right to pass the national portion.  Forty questions are what the N.C.R.E.C. calls the North Carolina portion of the test.  An applicant has to get 29 of the 40 questions correct to pass both halves of the North Carolina real estate exam.  If an applicant fails either half of the exam, he can kiss $164 good bye. 

Last month, 178 test applicants took the comprehensive exam as a repeater.  Twenty six of those applicants passed.  That is a fifteen per cent success rate. 

Last month, fifty eight repeat test takers took the national portion of the North Carolina real estate exam for the second or third or fourth time.  Forty one passed.  That is a 71% pass rate. 

Last month, Three hundred and thirty one repeaters took the North Carolina only test.  One hundred ninety one passed.  That is a 56% pass rate. It cost $164 every time an applicant attempts the test. 

At $164 per opportunity, here is a  suggestion.   When you go to take the exam, leave a writing pad or recorder on the seat of your car.  If you show up back to your car with a failure notice in your hand, start writing down the questions that you did not know the answer to.  When you go back KNOW the answer to those questions.  If one of the questions was," How many members of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission must be real estate brokers?", do you think you may see that same question when you come back? Find out the answer before then. 

Pass the North Carolina real estate exam the first time.

In North Carolina, if you have a real estate license in another state, you can take the North Carolina portion only of the test.  Pass it.  You can get your North Carolina real estate license without going to real estate school.  Last month, the pass rate for this adventure was 23%.  If you want to know if you are ready, take my practice exam at www.ncreexam.com .   

Please do not underestimate this North Carolina real estate exam.  If you are soon taking this test, recognize that it is difficult.  Study!  Study!  Study!

Study your textbook.  Many students go take the $164 exam without reading the textbook.  That makes no sense.  Many students take the $164 exam even though they have not answered the questions at the end of the chapters in their textbooks.  Surprise!  Many of these students are paying $164 to try again.
